The Kingdom of Southgate was in trouble. The guilds held too much power and many local vassals were disloyal at best. King Ranlor was a good man just not a skilled and did not have a direct heir. With his kingdom barely holding together he seized on a plan to reassert his authority over the Firbolgs of White Oak Valley and end the “toll” on the goods coming from the north and east.
Fearing insurrection King Ranlor took the rare precaution of taking both his signet ring and scepter with him as his army of three thousand marched north from the gates of Talindor. Whiterocks had always been steadfast in its support of the crown so it was the natural place to stop and resupply before venturing into the White Oak Valley. Once in Whiterocks The King feasted for two days to show his goodwill to the citizens, promising greater prosperity once the Firbolg King was defeated.
King Ranlor and his army entered White Oak Valley and battled the Firbolgs. Victory was at had when the Firbolg King was slain, but then the unexpected happened. The Firbolg ,Queen Sylrora was so enraged by her husbands death at the hands of the humans that she swore a curse so vile that it damned her soul. The curse is no human would ever rule the White Oak Valley as long as she sits on the Firbolg throne. So mighty was this curse it cause the rivers to flood valley, drowning King Ranlor and his army. To this day the valley is known as the Great Firbolg Swamp as Queen Sylrora stills sits upon the throne.
