Well, the game rules are that a horse has a 10’ base. Seem fair to me, if properly worked with a horse adds a lot of strength to the rider’s attack. I think horses are way under used in this game. What say you?

I believe warhorses are underused because the rules are a bit ambiguous and they don’t work seamlessly with non-mounted characters.
The key problem is having to hold an attack so the non-mounted character can attack whereas any other person running by would get AOO’d. There is no free avoidance to AOOs without a feat, spell, or similar. Allowing horses to assume they are free from AOOs makes them tanks. Same problem with flying creatures — who gets to attack them and when?
If these can be addresses so as not to bog down the game and still keep it fun, I’m good with it.

IF we are to ramp up use, I’d suggest the base is 5″ X 10″. Makes sense.

One vote for ramping up the use since I’m playing a Cavalier.
10 x 10 is fine by me and I think makes sense based on the amount of space a horse takes up. But, I’m good with 5 x 10 as well and that matches up better with every miniature out there.

I believe a running horse and its rider are subject to AOOs just like anyone else. There are or were, ride by feats that let you attack (once) and keep going. I believe fly by feat exists as well.

Horses are naturally limited based on environment. Dungeons, ocean campaigns and cave campaigns tend to limit their use.

The width of a standard horse trailer stall is 40″. This leave a few inches on either wide. The width of the entire trailer interior is 6’8″ which is enough for two horses.

I did some reading up on medieval warhorses and the typical destrier was not a Clydesdale sized horse, but rather smaller, bred for quickness, maneuverability and aggression, 14 to 15 hands and 1000 to 1200 pounds. Big horses were too big and clumsy and slow off the blocks for the job, and generally more placid.

A horse with tack and gear and rider is going to be a few inches wider than the horse alone. Warhorses tended to be wider at the chest and shoulders, while draft and plow horses were widest at the belly.

A horse can easily fit through a man door, although it will have to duck. Frisky horses often slip out of the man door in the side of a trailer if it is open because they don’t like to walk backward. The withers of a warhorse (the highest point when ducking) at 15 hands is 60 inches.

As for stance, horses in motion put their hooves under center of mass, so a horse can easily walk in a 12″ rut as long as it’s straight. When still, a horse’s hooves will be 12″ to 18″ apart, so no flared fenders required.

An average horse can’t turn in a 40″ stall, but it is close enough that they often try. In a five foot (60″) space, it would be easy. A ten foot space is 120″, so wide enough to stall three horses.

In my opinion we haven’t gone down this path because our worlds are not set up to support horses.
Traveling doesn’t always work well, getting a man servant to watch them as we step into a portal, and teleporting all make it much harder and frustrating for everyone.

There is also not a clear cut progression for the animals to gain experience (at least that has been agreed upon) so they stay very close to first level. This makes them useless as the campaign rolls on.

All that being said, I believe it makes sense that a horse would be a 5×10 space, even after reading the previous posts and seeing Ron next to one. I won’t disagree if the doogin keeps them at 10×10.
I’m good with either and believe it is something that should be decided by the doogin at the start of the campaign. And we have each of them in the appropriate base.
