Rupert in in his most booming voice, “I am a simple fisherman from Cherry Hill, an adventurer, a rogue, a businessman, a husband and a King. Being King is the least of my gifts and yet I am known for little else beyond my inner circle. I think of myself as a good man and I have a strong desire to see the kingdom unified. I did not ask to be King but I have accepted the role and I give an oath to do my best to serve the people of Esteria.”
“Well? What do you think of the start Malus?”
“Hmm, to be honest your Grace, it sounds a bit silly. Esteria has gone without a King for far too long. The people need someone to inspire them with confidence.”
“For all the gods Malus, why must you insist on calling me your Grace? Or King for that matter! When there is no one else around can’t you just call me Ru?”
“Get used to it your Grace. It is important that I use the proper terms regardless of our circumstances lest I forget and have a slip of the tongue at the wrong time.”
“Well if I have to stay here and carry on like royalty, I think you should as well. You are the Hand after all.”
“You know I cannot your Grace. You also knew that my acceptance of the role was temporary. Circumstances require our attention beyond the walls and who better to lead our gang of misfits than me?”
“How about Ford? Let him lead the expedition. You are rather good at this diplomatic stuff. Much better than I am.”
Malus chuckles, “Ford. Yes, he does ‘inspire’ doesn’t he. I know you will miss me my friend, I and I will miss you as well; but it must be. We leave within the week so for the time that remains I will help if you wish in determining my replacement.”
“You cannot be replaced my friend. I will never trust anyone as much as I trust you. Still, Norlin has been a good advisor and he seems to know is way around the Nobles, backstabbers that they are.”
“A fine and obvious choice your Grace. I’ve grown to like Norlin and he is indeed wise about many things. Felisha however is likely to be your best advisor. She is more than just your wife and the Queen. She has lived the life of a noble and is very clever if you don’t mind me saying.”
“She is a fine woman indeed.”
“If that is all your Grace. I need to find Ford and rescue your troops from his overly zealous ‘instruction’ and round up the rest of the boys to prepare for our departure. I’ve also heard one of the knights of the shield have asked permission to join our group. I should like to meet with the young man to see if he has what it takes.”
“Of course Malus. And thank you, for everything. You know that I ….um well.”
Malus firmly grasps Rupert’s arms, “Yes Rupert. You needn’t say it out loud. I feel the same for you. Not to worry, I will see you again before we depart. I am still the Hand after all. At least for a few more days.”

To the rest of the group, Greg having my character say “who else but me to lead” is not the same as my character saying it. He will continue to be exotically and impossibly good looking, insightful, funny, and the life of the social gathering, but he knows that each of us will follow the person who makes the best argument for what we should do next. Do not expect that he will wear the little fist on his lapel, either literally or figuratively. He’s had quite enough of that role. And if anyone refers to him as “your hand,” he will animate the next dragon we kill and instruct it to hump that person’s leg for the rest of eternity.
